2017 Day 363 – On that Day (II)

I read a prophecy from Zechariah that appears to go a bit farther into the future than that about which I blogged yesterday (On that Day (I)).

On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.

On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.

And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.  Revelation 14: 6-9

A day is coming when God will rule over all, when living waters flow, when light does not stop shining.

Some believe that day is the 1000 years rule talked about in today’s Revelation reading (so often Zechariah and Revelation coincide, as I blogged here). During the millennial, believers “reign with Christ for a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:4b).

But I think along with other theologians that these verses point to the new heavens and the new earth. Revelation 22 talks about the New Jerusalem:

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.  They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.  And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.  Revelation 22: 1-5

This new world fulfills Zecheriah’s prophecy:

  • The river of life flows through the city
  • God and the  Lamb will reign from the throne.  And His people will reign forever
  • God will be the light – so there is no need for a sun or lamp

How cool that the end chapters of Zechariah (and the Old Testament) coincide with the end of Revelation (and of the New Testament).

And want an awesome set of prophecies: the never ending light of God, living water, and a God who reigns over all!

Dear Lord: Thanks for your Word and for the world we have to look forward to. Help me want Your kingdom to come more than I do right now. Amen.
