2017 Day 360 – Behold, Your King

Zechariah and John (in Revelation) give two prophecies about Jesus:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9

[The 10 kings who serve the “beast”] will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful. Revelation 17:14

Jesus is both the king and the Lamb.

He’s the righteous king who rides humbly into Jerusalem before ascending the Cross to obtain our salvation (Matthew 21:5). And He’s the Lamb who by shedding his blood conquered sin, death, and Satan — who will eventually completely conquer all evil.

He is Lord of lords and King of kings.

Jesus is both humble savior and conquering hero. And it’s the humble death which inflicts the death blow against His enemies:

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, [Jesus] himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil…. Hebrews 2: 14

[By His death and resurrection, Jesus canceled] the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Colossians 2: 14-15

Jesus conquers his enemies not by taking up arms or exerting His power, but by humbly entering Jerusalem on a donkey (prophesied 500 years before the fact). And that humble entry ensures the final victory over God’s (and our) enemies – predicted in Revelation.

Thanks be to God that one day everything bad that’s been done will one day be undone – because our conquering King was the sacrificial Lamb.

Dear Lord: Sometimes these truths seem so theoretical, so distant from my daily life. Please increase the awe by which I recognize Your majesty and sacrifice – and worship You for them. Amen.
