I blogged yesterday about Paul’s fortuitous house arrest in Rome – where the Gospel spread under seemingly difficult circumstances.
Today my One Year Bible took me to Romans 1. Paul’s drive to share the Gospel with the Roman church is palpable in this chapter!!
Obviously this letter was written before Paul wound up in Rome under house arrest – because he tells the Roman Christians how eager he is to visit for the first time: “I long to see you, that I may impart some spiritual gift to strengthen you.” (Romans 1: 11)
Paul desires mutual encouragement between the Roman Christians and himself, but he is also driven to “reap some harvest among [them] as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.” (Vs. 13).
Again he says, “I am eager to preach the Gospel to you also who are in Rome.” (vs. 15)
Why is Paul so motivated to share the Gospel?
… it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17
The Gospel “is the power of God for salvation!”
The Gospel saves people!
The phrase “righteousness of God” means a “righteousness from God,” not worked up by men, but delivered to them from God because of the perfect life and sinless death of His Son, Jesus Christ — a righteousness received by faith.
The Gospel ensures God’s righteousness is delivered to those who believe!
So Paul had to share it!
But there’s another motive revealed earlier in Romans 1. Paul says that he has been called:
…to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ… Romans 1: 5b, 6
Paul shares the Gospel “for the sake of his name.”
Paul wants to share the Gospel so that people place their faith in Christ, leading to transformed lives of obedience. Why do this?
For the sake of Jesus’ honor, his name. Lives transformed by the Gospel bring glory God! Paul’s ultimate goal is to lift up the name of Jesus.
Paul shares the Gospel so that people are saved. But in the end, it’s all about God’s Glory!
Dear Lord: Please help me be more motivated to share the Gospel – more concerned that people receive salvation and more convicted to bring honor to Your Name through their transformed lives!! Amen.
