I’m sad tonight. Very sad. I had dreamed that a specific circumstance in my life would turn out differently than it did. It hurts when our hopes are dashed, our longings left unfilled.
But I know this: if God wants to meet my needs in a specific way, He is FULLY capable of doing so. And He always does what is best for me.
As John Newton wrote in a 1775 letter:
[God] has a sovereign right to do with us as He pleases… and to those who seek Him, His sovereignty is exercised in a way of grace. All shall work together for good; everything is needful that He sends; nothing can be needful that He withholds.
God only withholds that which I do not need.
But if I DO need something, God is totally capable of sending it to me.
David battles Goliath in today’s 1 Samuel passage. Again and again, David testifies of God’s power – that God will send the victory and it doesn’t depend on might.
Just listen to David’s faith!
And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!” 1 Samuel 17:37
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand… that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord‘s, and he will give you into our hand.”vs. 45-47
David knew that the battle belonged to God, that God would make a way for victory – and that God didn’t have to rely on sword and spear.
It’s the same today.
If God wants to give us victory in some area of our lives, it’s no stretch for Him. If He knows it’s best to give us something that our heart desires, then it’s a piece of cake.
David knew that God would defend the “armies of the living God” (his own people) as he repeats several times (vs. 26, 36, 45). And He did.
And God will do what is best for His people to help us to spiritual victory. Whatever we need, He will supply. Whatever He doesn’t supply, we did not need.
What great hope for me in time of pain!! God knows exactly what I need and with no exertion at all, He will win every battle in my soul! And give me EXACTLY what I need to wage the battle to daily draw closer to Him.
Dear Lord: You know the pain I feel. Please comfort me. You’ve been before me in all suffering. You completely understand. I praise You that if You want something for me, it’s a snap to provide it. I can rest in Your gracious plan for my life, a plan that requires no effort on Your part. Because the battle is ALWAYS Yours! Amen.
