Before I get into today’s post, I wrote about a passage in today’s readings a few years ago. Read here about the man Jesus healed at the pool of Bethesda. Did he really want to be healed?
Now onto what I wrote today.
For whatever reason, Jesus does not come right out in Scripture and say, “Hey, ya’ll. I’m God, you know, the guy who created the universe and pretty much owns you.”
Jesus might not have called Himself God,the Jewish leaders decided to kill him in part because he made it clear that He was God. As here in today’s John reading:
…the Jews were seeking all the more to kill [Jesus], because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. John 5: 18
Jesus realizes what’s going on, but He doesn’t stop talking about his relationship with the Father. No! He continues on. Jesus didn’t let a little death threat stop him from talking about the Father.
Jesus knew He would die at their hands, but not forever.
And if these leaders don’t recognize who Jesus is, they will die themselves. But if they honor and believe in Jesus, they will live:
Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. vs. 23b-24
That’s all. I thought these verses were a pretty clear indication of Jesus’ divinity and the basis of eternal life – believing who Jesus said he was and trusting in his work on our behalf – taking our judgment on Himself.
Dear Lord: Help more people realize that You are God and that You made a way for them to have eternal life. And use my mouth to help share that story. Amen
