It’s Christmastime! And I just happened to read this verse (as quoted in part by Matthew – 2:6) to our girls yesterday:
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. (Micah 5:2 ESV)
I love those OT Prophecies fulfilled in Jesus. But, hey, doesn’t the whole OT point to Him?!
The Jewish interpreters of the OT prophecies didn’t get everything right about what the prophets meant, but they knew that this passage referred to the Messiah – a surprise of a ruler (from Bethlehem??) who has a connection back to the Davidic line, back even to the beginning.
By the same token (that prophecy is often impossible to interpret), I think this passage from Revelation (in today’s reading) could be about the entrance of Jesus, God’s secret of salvation:
The [seventh] angel promised, “There will be no more waiting! In the days when the seventh angel is ready to blow his trumpet, God’s secret will be finished. This secret is the Good News God told to his servants, the prophets.” (Revelation 10: 6b-7 NCV)
No matter what it all means, one day we will look back and marvel how God had it planned all along. We’ll fully understand what every prophecy meant. And we will enjoy all the amazing blessings promised to the nation of Israel that have yet to be fulfilled.
Looking forward to it!
